Maluaka Beach, Maui: Parking, Facilities and Turtle Town Access

Better serviced than the state park

This is the practical draw. A County of Maui parks study describes two comfort stations, one at the north parking lot and one near the south end, with showers beside both, plus three paved parking areas and a grassy area with picnic tables. The north lot, across from Keawalaʻi Congregational Church, held around 25 marked stalls and was signed as a public beach right-of-way.

Those counts come from a study that used mid-2000s data, so read them as a description of the layout rather than as this morning's stall count. The facilities themselves are maintained by Mākena Golf & Beach Club rather than by the county.

Who actually runs Maluaka is unresolved

We'd rather show you the disagreement than pick a side. The County of Maui called Maluaka Beach Park a 4.31-acre county-owned facility in that parks study, and noted even then that the adjacent resort maintained its parking and restrooms. But Maluaka is absent from the county's current commercial-use rules for the Kīhei-Mākena area, which do name a dozen other beaches, and we could not find a live county facility page for it.

So the honest position is that Maluaka has been described as a county beach park, its amenities are maintained privately, and its present administrative status isn't something we can confirm. If you need a definitive answer, the County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation is the place to ask.

What isn't in doubt: the beach itself is public. Hawaiʻi law gives a right of transit along the shoreline seaward of the vegetation line, whoever owns the land behind it.

No tower on this sand

County of Maui Ocean Safety records lifeguard towers on this coast only at Mākena State Park. Maluaka has none, and neither does anywhere else along here.

That's worth weighing against the fact that this is where people come to snorkel a reef. A sandy entry and a calm surface are not the same thing as supervision.
